Two Techniques You Can Use To Foster A Culture Of Diversity At Your Company

Blog

If you are a business owner, creating and maintaining a culture of diversity within your company should be high on your list of priorities.  When you have individuals from all walks of life working for you, they bring unique ideas and perspectives that may help to keep your products and services fresh and appealing to consumers.

However, it can sometimes be difficult to develop a culture of diversity if you don't know what to do.  Use these tips to learn more about how you can foster an exciting culture of diversity at your company as soon as possible:

Switch Up Your Recruiting Strategy

The first key to developing a more diverse staff is to be versatile with your recruiting methods.  Although it's quite common to choose a hiring method and stick to it, you may find that it is not allowing you to gain access to the diverse audience that you want to work with.

For example, you may be the owner of a company that almost strictly hires people who attend your on-site job fairs.  If your business is situated in a location that is not very diverse, you will typically find that your staff begins to be comprised of local people who likely think and work in the same way.

You can avoid this problem by switching up your recruiting strategy.  Take the time to visit various websites that cater to people of other racial groups and sexual orientations.  Many of these sites feature job boards where hiring managers and business owners can make job posts.  Doing this is a great way to get the word out about your company to people who may not have heard about it otherwise, allowing you to diversify your staff.

Foster Diversity By Being Diverse

Another way you can celebrate diversity at your workplace is by simply being diverse.  Too many employers make the mistake of evaluating all of their employees the exact same way.  This does not honor the fact that everyone is different, and that they all bring something unique to the table.

A good example of this is found in the call center environment.  Phone representatives may be evaluated according to a number of different factors:  Handle time, tone, professionalism, and call resolution.

There could be one employee who has a naturally exuberant personality who has a tendency to talk a bit too long with customers.  Ordinarily, this employee would be reprimanded and maybe even issued a warning of termination if the handle time does not come down.

However, in a diverse workplace, this employee would be applauded because they have such a natural way of creating rapport with customers that neither one wants to hang up.  Allowing this kind of diversity is a great way to increase employee morale.

Creating a diverse work environment helps with innovation so your company is always on the cutting edge.  Start using these tips right away so you can enjoy the benefits of diversity. Contact a company like DiversityInc with any questions you have.

Planning for the Worst

When I first went into business, I was confident that there was a market for my services and that I had the smarts and drive to make a go of my business. But while I was hoping for the best, I also made it a point to plan for the worst. That’s why I wanted the most comprehensive commercial insurance for my business. I shopped around, researched different types of commercial insurance, and finally found a policy that I thought could protect me against almost anything. I am much more confident knowing that no matter what happens, I’m protected. I think that’s really helped me do what I needed to do to get my business off the ground.
